In Val Senale you can experience the thrill of high altitude holidays in the world of Ötzi where you can ski even in summer. The highest cable car in South Tyrol leads comfortably in just 6 minutes at an altitude of 3200 meters.
An old tradition of Val Senales is the spectacular sheep transhumance . Around mid-June, up to 3,500 sheep pass through the Val Venosta through the Giogo Alto (2857 m) and Giogo Basso (3019 m) in the Vent Valley, in Austria. Herdsmen, shepherds and dogs follow the flock and in two days they travel more than 44 km, overcoming steep rocky paths, snowfields, moraines and even glaciers. In mid-September the flocks come back through the same path, a big party accompanies the event.
Where to sleep
You can try the emotion (and the frost) of sleeping inside an igloo ! At the Bellavista refuge . Another name could not be given to this shelter. Surrounded by the high peaks of the Val Senales, it is a special place that offers a view of enchantment from every window, even from the bathrooms and showers.
The Lake Vernago is an artificial lake which was built in the fertile valley. The position is sunny. A path invites you to hike around the lake passing over two suspension bridges. An excursion lasting approx. 2 hours, ideal for families. Along another path you can go around the farms above the lake and find some beautiful alpacas .
Where to eat
The modern restaurant on the glacier ” Grawand ” (3251 m) with its self-service and panoramic terrace with views of 300 peaks above three thousand meters, the “Bella Vista” hut (2842 m) and the “Lazaun” hut ( 2430 m). You can also sleep on the highest panoramic terrace there is!
The Val Senales glacier, also called Giogo Alto, is located between the Val Senales in South Tyrol and the Austrian Vent valley in the Ötztal Alps. It covers 185 hectares and is three kilometers long . About one sixth of its surface is used for the ski area. Scientists also observe a continuous reduction in the mass of ice at Giogo Alto. The surface retreat is however a little less evident than for other glaciers in the central Alps.
